Sunday Riley is a popular skincare brand known for high-end, results-driven products. But the brand ran into a big ethical issue when it came out that employees were told to write fake positive reviews on Sephora. This made the products seem better than they actually were and misled customers. From a consumer perspective, this definitely hurt trust. Reviews are a huge part of how people decide what skincare to buy, especially when the products are expensive. Once people realized those reviews weren’t real, it made the brand feel dishonest. Even if the products worked, it made customers question everything. That kind of situation can lower engagement because people are less likely to buy, leave reviews, or trust the brand again.

The overall impact on the brand was pretty serious. The FTC got involved and required Sunday Riley to stop these practices. Even without major fines, the bigger issue was the damage to their reputation. In the beauty industry, trust is everything, and once you lose it, it is hard to fully get back. If I were managing the brand, I would have done things very differently. Instead of fake reviews, I would focus on real customer feedback, even if it is not perfect. Honest reviews actually help build credibility. I also think they should have had stricter internal rules to prevent something like this from happening in the first place. Once the issue came out, they also could have handled the response better. Being upfront, taking accountability, and showing how they were going to fix it would have helped rebuild trust faster.
Overall, this situation shows that trying to cut corners in marketing can backfire. In a space like beauty, being real matters way more than trying to look perfect.
